In this photograph, you can see the Japanese farm-house style structural technique of Tom's teacher, Jokan Ohama. The unfinished beams above distribute the weight of the roof so as to support the span of the dining room. In the upper center, a box-like structural bracket hangs from a large, curved beam, supporting and tying together the directional forces of several other major beams.
