This house, built during the mid 80's and early 90's, was the culmination of the apprenticeship between Tom and his teacher, architect and master craftsman Jokan Ohama. The house is built on a traditional Japanese grid layout in the shinkabe style, with the posts sized larger than the walls themselves, and all layout done relative to the center of the posts. Jokan Ohama's remarkable genius is displayed on the interior, which is built in the Japanese farm-house style. Large, unfinished structural beams hold the house together and distribute weight across large spans. The garden house, gate, and deck are later additions. Return to Gallery
