A major project Tom worked on under the tutelage of Jokan Ohama. Designed by Mr. Ohama, and emblematic of his inventive genius, this building combines elements of Japanese farmhouse design with some techniques used in building Buddhist temples. The structure, made of yellow cedar, is built around a large cantilever system which uses the collected weight from the far side of the building to support the large spans of the main room. The forces distributed by the levered beams are phenomenal, and subtly energize the interior with their unseen work. Return to Gallery
